About Me

Bryn Schut (she/her)

Freelance Editor

Your writing is a precious thing and deserves a great support team. With that in mind, let me tell you about who I am and why we should work together.

My name is Bryn. I’m rapidly approaching my mid-thirties, am a huge nerd, and am terrible at introducing myself. I grew up in the High Desert of Southern California, where I learned such skills as “avoiding going outside”, “books are great”, and “daydreams are easier to revisit when you write them down.” I took those skills with me when I moved to Northern California to pursue a couple of degrees in English. Recently, I have moved with my partner Tom and our three cats to the state of Virginia, where these life lessons have come in handy during a global pandemic.

I hold three college degrees. The first is an Associate of Arts degree from Victor Valley College (2009). The other two are a Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in Creative Writing (2012) and a Master of Arts in English with a concentration in Creative Writing (2015), both from Sonoma State University.

I have a wealth of experience working with writers. While at Sonoma State, I worked at the Writing Center, where I was able to assist students with revising and editing their academic work. Concurrently, in my creative writing courses, I worked with my classmates to revise, edit, and expand their poetry, fiction, and non-fiction projects. During my time in grad school, I also taught an introductory course to fantasy fiction writing where I helped beginning writers take their first steps into cohesive storytelling. Since my graduation, in addition to working other jobs, I have served as a freelance editor for a handful of former classmates.

Before my move to Virginia, I had been working at the Cosumnes River College Reading and Writing Center, where I worked primarily with non-native English speakers and students who felt less than comfortable in academic settings.

With everything going on in the world today, 2020 has taught me that life is too short to not do what you love. I love writing, and I love supporting people in their writing journeys. I want to help you love your writing and make it into the best form it can be.

In short, working with me means getting the benefit of working with someone experienced in both academic and creative writing. I love writing so much that I keep coming back to jobs that will allow me to support other writers. Let me be that support for you.
